Comparative morphology of the sagittal otolith of mullet species (Mugilidae) from the Iskenderun Bay, north-eastern Mediterranean

Abstract

This study was conducted to describe the otolith morphology of five mullet species using SEM images from the Iskenderun Bay, north-eastern Mediterranean. A comparison was made to identify the most appropriate taxonomical characters that can separate the species and genera of the family Mugilidae. Among otolith characters, shape and sculpture are same in species, there were not any differences observed among the genera. Additionally, ostium, cauda, ostio-caudal differentiation, crista superior, crista inferior, rostrum, antirostrum, and excisura are not considered good taxonomic characters for discriminating among the studied species.
